Henri Matisse war ein Suchender. Seine Reisen nach Belle-Île, Collioure, Tanger oder Tahiti waren mehr als Ortswechsel: Es waren künstlerische Expeditionen, in denen er fremde Lichtstimmungen, ornamentale Welten und neue Raumgefühle entdeckte. Diese Eindrücke schlugen sich oft erst Jahre später nieder, wie etwa die Erinnerung an Tahiti, die in den Scherenschnitten wiederkehrt.
